5 things you need to know today

  • Peak-hour traffic in Sydney has been thrown into chaos after a police operation closed several lanes on the Harbour Bridge this morning. Police received reports of an unauthorised climber on the bridge shortly before 4.30am. Police responders were closing and reopening lanes on the Harbour Bridge as the man moved around the bridge structure, so traffic conditions were changing regularly. By 6.25am all north-bound lanes were closed, and city-bound lanes were reduced, a Traffic Management Centre spokeswoman said. Two north-bound lanes had been reopened by 6.45am.

  • A female shooter has allegedly opened fire at YouTube's headquarters in California, injuring at least three people before turning the gun on herself in a domestic-related incident. San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said officers arrived to find at least three people injured, including at least one man and one woman with gunshot wounds.

  • Santos have recieved a $13.5 billion takeover offer from the US-owned, priate equity backed Harbour Energy. The $6.50 bid represents a 30% premium above Santos's last closing price.

  • Spotify made its debut on Wall Street overnight. But not everything went according to plan. The New York Stock Exchange welcomed the Swedish-based company by flying a Swiss flag at the entrance. 

  • Overnight, tech stocks have rebounded as the NYSE welcomed Spotify. In markets, the Dow Jones Dow Jones +1.7% at 24,033, S&P 500 +1.3% at 2,614, Nasdaq +1% at 6,941. Over to Europe, the FTSE -0.4% at 7,030, DAX -0.8% at 12,002, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.4% at 3,346.
