5 things you need to know today

  • Four climbers have died in the Swiss Alps after an unexpected snowstorm coupled with high winds hit the Pigne d'Arolla region. Other climbers were caught off-guard by high winds, snow and bitter cold, and were forced to spend the night outdoors. Several of those rescued were suffering from hypothermia, and were rushed to area hospitals. Police said three people died in hospital, and another apparently was killed in a fall.
  • President Donald Trump said he is considering holding his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un at the demilitarised zone with South Korea, rather than in a third-party country, because of the potential to have a "great celebration." The president's announcement, made first in a tweet and then reiterated during a news conference, came after his aides had focused for weeks on arranging the historic meeting outside the Korean Peninsula
  • ANZ's first-half profit has jumped 14% to $3.3 billion as it pushes ahead with plans to slim down and exit its investments in Asia. Cash profit, the bank's preferred measure, which strips out one-off items — rose 4% to $3.5 billion compared to a year ago and was in line with market expectations.
  • The adult film actress Stormy Daniels has filed a lawsuit accusing US President Donald Trump of defamation for a tweet suggesting she made up an incident in which she said she was warned not to discuss an alleged sexual encounter with Mr Trump. Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, sued over an April 18 tweet in which Mr Trump suggested she lied about the existence of a man portrayed in a sketch she released a day earlier. Ms Daniels is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.
  • Australian shares are headed for a weak start, after Wall Street fell over a spike in oil prices. The Dow Jones fell 0.6%, or 148 points, to 24,163. The S&P 500 dropped 0.8% and the Nasdaq slipped 0.75%. Over to Europe, the  FTSE +0.1% at 7,509, DAX +0.25% at 12,612, Euro Stoxx 50 +0.5% at 3,537.
