  • On Saturday, wedding registries opened for same sex couples after the newly passed laws were inacted on Friday night. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the enacting of the laws as a "big Australian hug for all same-sex couples". "It is now part of Australian law," he said. The first same-sex weddings are expected to take place on Janurary 9.
  • AGL Energy is persistent that it will close its old Liddell coal power plant in 2022, as scheduled, saying that replacement generation is more affordable than extending the life of the coal-fired electricity plant. The company will replace the power station’s current output with a mixture of gas, wind and solar plants. 
  • After reaching a record high on Friday, Bitcoin lost almost a fifth of it's value in less than ten hours, having surged more than 40% in the preceding 48-hours. Experts fear the market may be heading for a price collapse.
  • National and international counter-terrorism experts will meet in Melbourne today, as authorities warn Australia is entering peak terrorism season. It is the first time the forum has ever been held in Australia and will bring together law enforcement agencies, emergency management, government and academia. The theme of the forum is Global Terrorism Prevention. The meeting comes after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on Saturday his forces had rid the country of extremist militia group, ISIS. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said it was not the end of terrorism.
  • Cleanaway Waste Management has offered to buy smaller rival Tox Free Solutions for $3.425 a share in cash, valuing Tox at $671 million on a diluted basis. The Cleanaway offer is at a 20.6 per cent premium to Tox's closing level on Friday of $2.84. Under the deal, Tox shareholders would be entitled to receive an interim dividend of $0.05 a share in fiscal 2018, the company said in a statement.
