5 things you need to know today

1. Bob Katter has said he is "open to the idea" of adding extra sitting weeks in parliament as proposed by Labor in the wake of the Hayne Royal Commission's recommendations. All seven independent MPs would need to support Labor's plan.

2. The S&P/ASX 200 dropped 10.7 points, or 0.18%, yesterday to close at 6060.80. The finance index was down 1.15% after a 6.82% drop for Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and a 4.03% fall for Bank of Queensland, while the Big Four banks all fell over 1%.

3. Economic growth in the UK slowed to 1.4% in 2018, down from 1.8% in 2017 and the lowest rate since 2012.

4. US deputy trade representative Jeffrey Gerrish and other US officials are in Beijing for trade talks ahead of meetings involving Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin later this week.

5. On Wall Street, after minor gains during the overnight session, the Dow closed down 0.21%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.07% and the Nasdaq 0.13%.
