5 things you need to know today

1. In a budget update today, the Coalition is expected to announce a surplus of just over $4 billion for the 2019-20 financial year and an accumulated surplus of $30 billion by 2021-22, more than double the previous projections, according to The Australian.

2. A boost to aged care funding by $552.9 million and release 10,000 high-level home care packages will also be announced by the Morrison government.

3. Bill Shorten has announced plans for affordable housing and changes to existing superannuation and environmental policies at the Labor National Conference in Adelaide.

4. A protester against the Adani coal mine, as well as a group protesting offshore detention, interrupted Shorten's speech at the conference.

5. British Prime Minister Theresa May has criticised Tony Blair for interfering in negotiations between the government and the European Union, and said Blair's support of a second referendum was "an insult to the office he once held and the people he once served".
