5 things you need to know today

1. The US and China have agreed to halt trade war escalations for 90 days after Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met at the G20 summit on the weekend. A tariff increase from 10% to 25% on US$200 billion worth of goods imported from China to the US that was set to be implemented from the new year has been put on hold.

2. Scott Morrison has outlined how he became prime minister to President Donald Trump as part of a meeting between the two leaders that lasted about 20 minutes. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was also spotted with a 'cheat sheet' briefing her on Morrison, complete with a photograph of the PM.

3. 19 of the 20 leaders at the summit declared their support for the Paris accord to tackle climate change, with the US being the only country to not back the agreement.

4. Malcolm Turnbull has criticised plans for Liberal backbencher Craig Kelly to be pre-selected as the party's candidate in the next election.

5. The New York City Police Department have come to the rescue of a couple from the UK after a man dropped an engagement ring down a drain in Times Square. The police were able to successfully retrieve the ring.
