5 things you need to know today

1. The Morrison goverment is considering holding two federal elections next year according to a Fairfax report. A Senate election would be held in early 2019 followed by a House of Representatives election "several months later". Prime Minister Scott Morrison has denied the claims.

2. The Reserve Bank is not expected to end a 27-month streak of keeping interest rates at the record low 1.5% when it announces its decision at 2:30pm.

3. Foreign Minister Marise Payne has been invited to visit China later this week. The trip, which will include talks with the country's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, marks the first time an Australian foreign minister has visited China in almost three years according to The Australian.

4. A man has died after being attacked by a shark at the Whitsunday islands yesterday. The attack occured in the same harbour where two tourists were bitten in separate incidents in September.
