1. Kerryn Phelps is 1,613 votes ahead of Dave Sharma according to the most recent count in the Wentworth by-election, with a 19% swing against the Liberals.

2. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and other senior Coalition figures have criticised Malcolm Turnbull for not publicly endorsing Sharma, with Liberal Party president Nick Greiner telling The Australian "he could have sent out a tweet that said ‘Sharma is the best candidate and you should vote for him’".

3. Kevin Rudd's new book The PM Years will put his former colleagues in the firing line, with Fairfax reporting that Rudd describes former Treasurer Wayne Swan as "incompetent" in the book.

4. In parliament today, Scott Morrison will deliver an apology to victims of institutional child sexual abuse, alongside a the launch of a new museum and research centre.

5. Russia's deputy foreign minister has said that Donald Trump's plan to drop a nuclear missile treaty signed during the Cold War in 1987 "would be a very dangerous step". Meanwhile, Trump has stated that Russia had not been honoring the agreement even though the US had been.
