5 things you need to know today

1. Labor's lead against the Coalition has narrowed since the leadership spill in August according to The Australian's latest Newspoll, with the Coalition at 47 and Labor at 53 in the two-party-preferred result. 

2. Meanwhile, the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll tells a slightly different story, with the Coalition polling 45% in the two-party-preferred vote compared to 55% to Labor.

3. Technology stocks improved on Wall Street on Friday, with all the FAANGs as well as Twitter and Microsoft all clawing back some of the losses from earlier last week.

4. Donald Trump has described defense secratary General Jim Mattis as "sort of a Democrat" in an interview with the US version of 60 Minutes. Trump also suggested that Mattis may exit soon.

5. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have arrived in Sydney ahead of the opening of the Invictus Games on Saturday.
