1. Following revelations that Peter Dutton freed a French au pair from detention earlier in the week, it has been revealed that Dutton also intervened to allow an Italian au pair into the country who was planning to work for a former colleague of Dutton's at the Queensland Police Service.

2. Nick Kyrgios has been unusually encouraged by the chair umpire in the third round of the US Open. Kyrgios was behing 3-0 in the second set when Swedish official Mohamed Lahyani left the chair and told Kyrgios, "I want to help you" and ""Nick, I know this is not you."

3. Trump is planning to impose tariffs on an additional US$200 billion worth of goods from China according to a report from Bloomberg. The tariffs, which could start being imposed as early as next week, would affect more than half of all imports from China.

4. Qantas expects it will be able to fly directly from Sydney to London starting in 2022. The airline is considering long-range aircraft from Airbus and Boeing to carry 300 people on the 20-hour flight.

5. Apple shares hit a record high of $US228.26 after the company announced it will unveil the next iPhone on September 12.
